The mircale of fate!

OH it's already the last week of surgery posting at TTSH. And I must say that the TTSH surgery department is really a very pleasant place to be at, and work in. But too bad I dun think I'm up to being a surgeon, otherwise working under the department would be fun.

And today Prof Low gave us all a farewell lunch! So he treated us to canadian pizzas after our tutorial, and he's so nice, and kindly and grandfatherly, so....I decided to help him when he needed it! haha..

So you guys remember in M1 when we were having our very first few first aid lectures, then the lecturer got a few seniors to pretend and act...like 1 person will pretend he is late for the lecture then he runs down the stairs and slips and falls and injures his foot, then his friends will run to his help and pretend to apply first aid in a lousy and unproffesional way such that it aggravates his injury. But anyway, I thought it was very lame and very leng-chang then. But Prof low needed help for that for his lecture today!

So I agreed! haha..so me, jirong, meng chong, joo siang and raj were the people doing it this year! IT was SOOO FUNNY! We decided meng choong shall be the one to fall down. Cos joo siang says he can make a huge fuss and cry out loudly in pain very well. HAha...but it was so horrible! The whole class kept laughing when we were trying our best to drag him down the LT stairs, cos prof low says must do it very unpro-ly..like everyone grab one limb. HAHA...and we kept laughing while we were doing it..

But it was all worth it, cos I just wanted to take prof's car-ride down to school, and see our M1s. Hmm...their batch is similar to us in one way...very noisy during lecture! hahaha...

But anyway, today Prof Low told us another true story that I thought is very amazing. He told us the story about the discovery of penicillin. (some facts prob inaccurate cos I can't rem very well..heh)

So long time ago, somewhere before/after/during(?) WWI, there was this rich man bringing his 4-year-old son to a lakeside for a walk. They were having fun, when suddenly his son fell into the lake, but the rich man couldn't swim! so he couldn't save his son! So he was horrified that rich as he was, he is going to lose the only son that he loves.

But just in the nick of time, a 9-year-old boy passed by on a bike, saw the little boy drowning, and saved him just in time. The rich man was filled with gratitude, so he went to the boy's house to visit him later on.

He asked the boy "What do you want to be when you grow up?
The boy said "hmm..probably like my father and grandfather, be a farmer!"
"But what if you don't have to be like your father? Then what would you want to be?"
"Hmm.......I wanna be a doctor!"

So the rich man, took the boy with him to london, and paid for his education, and years later, he did become a doctor.

Many years later, during WWII, Sir. Winston Churchill was down with pneumonia and was seriously ill. All the doctors tried all the medications that were available at that time, when antibiotics were still not available yet. However, Churchill's condition did not improve, and he was practically lying on his death bed.

Then, one of his doctors told him that there is a new drug--penicillin, that was just recently discovered by a doctor called Dr. Alexandra Fleming. But the drug hasn't even been used by hospitals yet and were not tested to be clinically safe. But Winston Churchill decided that since he was about to die anyway, then why not take the chance?

So the doctor called Dr. Fleming, the guy who discovered penicillin to Churchill's bedside. And Dr. Fleming administered the drug to Churchill. Miraculously, Churchill recovered fully after that, and he changed the entire course of WWII!

And Winston Churchill told Dr. Fleming.."Thank you doctor! You saved my life twice."
